De Latijnse naam is ''Congregatio Fratrum Beatae Mariae Virginis de Lourdes''. De afkorting FNDL komt evenwel van ''Fratres Nostræ Dominæ Lurdensis''.<br /> <br /> De aanleiding voor de oprichting was de ellende en armoede die kapelaan Glorieux in Ronse om zich heen zag. De congregatie richtte zich op verpleging, opvoeding en onderwijs.<br /> <br /> In [[1888]] werd het moederhuis verplaatst naar Oostakker.
