Hij was sluw en met zijn sluwheid zette hij graaf Frans Willem en diens vrouw Maria Catharina von Truchsess Waldburg Zell naar zijn hand. Niet alleen de bedienden op het slot maar alle Berghenaren spraken er schande van.<br /> <br /> Van Eppeln boog alles in zijn voordeel om. Dat [[Azewijn_bewoningsgeschiedenis#Daghuurders|daghuurder Derk van Gellekom]] uit [[Azewijn]] hem eens in het jaar een paar kippen bracht in ruil voor een vlonder dat hij over de [[Laak]] had mogen aanleggen, was nog het minste. Erger waren de <br /> talloze verduisteringen, waaraan hij zich schuldig maakte. Graaf Frans Willem had te weinig gezag om de oplichter-rentmeester te stoppen.<br /> <br /> Op een gegeven moment waren er toch genoeg bewijzen tegen Van Eppeln verzameld om een proces te kunnen beginnen. Om daaraan te ontkomen heeft hij, zo wordt vermoed, op 14 oktober [[1735]] [[Huis Bergh]] in brand gestoken. Hoewel de hele burgerij van [['s-Heerenberg]] was uitgelopen om te blussen en te redden wat er te redden viel, bleven alleen de noordelijke vleugel en de kapel gespaard.<br /> <br /> Van Eppeln heeft een proces kunnen ontlopen, maar zijn naam is voor altijd bezoedeld. Hij werd in [[1739]] nog wel een van de voogden van [[Graaf Johan Baptist]], zoon van de in [[1735]] overleden graaf Frans Willem, maar moest die positie vanwege zijn dubieuze verleden al snel opgeven.
