Het is niet bekend bij welk onderdeel hij diende, maar hij werd krijgsgevangen gemaakt en afgevoerd naar [[Duitsland]], waar hij werd geïnterneerd in het krijgsgevangenenkamp ''Stalag II-F'' in Bocholt. Zijn registratienummer als krijgsgevangene was 35563. ''Stalag'' staat voor ''Stammlager'' of voluit ''Mannschaftsstamm- und Straflager'', een krijgsgevangenenkamp voor manschappen en onderofficieren. Later werd hij overgebracht naar ''Stalag II-D'' bij Stargard in Pommeren (de stad ligt nu in Noordoost-Polen). Op 6 juni werd hij vrijgelaten en via Bentheim naar Nederland vervoerd.<br /> <br /> Op 30 maart [[1944]] trouwde hij in het [[Het Raethuys|gemeentehuis]] in [['s-Heerenberg]] met Wilhelmina Maria Slutter, geboren in [[Gendringen]] op 17 mei [[1920]] als dochter van Hendricus Johannes Slutter en Johanna Maria Evers.<br /> <br /> Gerritsen overleed op 7 juni [[1991]], 82 jaar oud, en werd begraven op [[Begraafplaats Beek|het kerkhof]] in [[Beek]].
