Vanaf 1 september dat jaar was Duistervoorde zijn eerste standplaats als kapelaan. Per 20 december [[1847]] werd hij kapelaan in de [[Sint Oswalduskerk|parochie Zeddam]] onder [[Terwindt, Matthias|pastoor Terwindt]].<br /> <br /> In [[1848]] hadden er grote wisselingen plaats in de geestelijkheid van [[Zeddam]]. Op 14 februari overleed pastoor Terwindt en werd opgevolgd door [[Goris, Henricus|pastoor Goris]]. Op 24 maart vertrok Nieuwenhuis' voorganger, [[Hemming, Henricus|kapelaan Hemming]] als pastoor naar [[Groenlo]]. Mogelijk heeft Zeddam vanwege ziekte van pastoor Terwindt tijdelijk twee kapelaans gehad. Op 10 december, na iets meer dan een jaar, vertrok Nieuwenhuis als kapelaan naar [[Arnhem]].
