Hij studeerde aan het [[seminarie in 's-Heerenberg]] in de jaren [[1827]]-[[1829]], maar waarschijnlijk langer. Als kapelaan was hij werkzaam in Martinusparochie in [[Didam]], vanwaar hij in de periode augustus-oktober [[1836]] voor zes weken werd overgeplaatst naar de [[Sint Oswalduskerk|parochie Zeddam]], omdat daar na het vertrek in augustus van [[Terwindt, Henricus Joannes|kapelaan Terwindt]] niet direct een opvolger beschikbaar was. Die kwam in oktober in de persoon van [[Haag, Lambertus Henricus van|kapelaan Van Haag]]. Dit was tijdens het pastoraat van [[Terwindt, Matthias|pastoor Terwindt]], die tevens [[Hollandse Missie#Aartspriesters en andere functionarissen|aartspriester]] van [[Hollandse Missie#Gebiedsindeling|Gelderland]] was en een oom van voornoemde kapelaan Terwindt.<br />
In [[1839]] werd Nijkamp kapelaan in Lichtenvoorde, waarna hij op 12 oktober [[1840]] werd benoemd tot pastoor van [[Gendringen]]. [[Ulft]], dat toen nog onder Gendringen viel, werd in [[1845]] afgesplitst, waarbij Nijkamp pastoor werd van de nieuwe parochie Ulft.<br />
<br />
In [[1853]] werd de [[Hollandse Missie]] opgeheven en de bisschoppelijke hiërarchie hersteld. Mgr. Zwijsen, de eerste aartsbisschop van Utrecht, deelde zijn aartsbisdom vervolgens op in veertien dekenaten, waarbij hij pastoor Nijkamp van Ulft tot eerste deken van het dekenaat Groenlo benoemde.<br />
<br />
Deken Nijkamp overleed in Ulft op 26 oktober [[1872]], 66 jaar oud.<br />
