Door de geldnood die de Gelderse hertog Reinald III (1343-1361 en 1371) had wegens de strijd tegen zijn broer Eduard, moest hij in 1355 zijn bezit in de Liemers verpanden aan graaf Jan van Kleef (1347-1368). Begin vijftiende eeuw werd duidelijk, dat het gebied nooit meer zou terugkeren in Gelders bezit.
