Population Register
This page is part of the Berghapedia, the free online encyclopaedia of the municipality of Bergh, which has existed in the east of the Netherlands from the early 19th century until 2005. During this period, a number of mergers and border corrections were carried out.

Introduction
The population registers of the former municipality of Bergh (including Netterden until 1863) cover the period from 1829 to 1937. They can be seen by the public on Wednesdays in the municipal archive of the town hall in 's-Heerenberg. The registered names can also be found on the website of the Streekarchivariaat Regio Achterhoek, which covers several municipal archives in the area. This website is only in Dutch, but instructions in English on how to search its database follow in the next section on this page.
The population registers do not mention a person's place of birth. This can only be found in the Civil Register, which was started in 1811 (see external link at the bottom of this page). The population register usually does mention a person's date of birth, but especially in the early years this information is not reliable.
Searching the population register online
Each page of the population register books provides a list of all persons who were residing at a given address during the period in question. In addition to the name the register usually mentions each person's birth date, relation to the principal occupier (relative, employee, lodger, etc.) and, if applicable, the date of arrival or departure and where the person came from or moved to.
In most cases not all persons on the same page belonged to one family. Personnel, lodgers and other residents were registered as well. When the principal occupier and his family left and new occupiers moved in, those who had left were crossed out and the new occupiers’ names were entered. Thus, persons registered at the same address were not necessarily living there at the same time. When the register books were getting full and/or too many names had been crossed out, new register books were taken and everyone was registered anew.
When a widow remarried, a new page was started and her new husband was registered as the new principal occupier. This was done from the time when the population registers were organised alphabetically rather then according to house numbers, which was the way it was done initially. Thus, a page of the population register shows the names of all of those who have been living there at some time or another during the period concerned. The names that are crossed out are of those who had left before others moved in.
Most of this information cannot be obtained from the website of the Streekarchivariaat. However, it is possible to indirectly reconstruct the list of names on a page of the population register’s books (and from that a family). To do so one has to know at least one person that belonged to the household of interest.
- On the left side of the homepage of the Streekarchivariaat Regio Achterhoek click <Onderzoek> and then <Bevolkingsregister>
- Enter the known data into the search fields.
- Leave Alle velden ("All Fields") blank
- Gemeente = Municipality. Choose Bergh
- Achternaam = Surname
- Voornaam = Christian name
- Periode (in jaren) van … tot = Period (in years) from … to. The period in which the person was born should be entered here. When the exact year of birth is known the same year should be entered twice.
- Click zoeken (search). The last column of the search result shows the registers/pages where a person is mentioned that matches the data.
- Suppose, for example, that page 66 of Register 4 (shown as 4/66) is the page you are now interested in.
- To find all persons on that page enter 66 into the search field Alle velden and choose gemeente "Bergh" in the next search field ("4/66" gives no search results).
- The search results give page 66 of each register books of the municipality of Bergh.
- Click Register/bladzijde in the last column to sort for this parameter.
- Scroll down to the results of 4/66, which are all entries on page 66 of Register 4. Remember that these results include also those who have moved out during the period in question (and have been crossed out in the original register).
This method won’t always work for low page number, because the number of hits may be too large for the system to handle. Another limitation is the fact that there are 63 Bergh register books. Thus, for page numbers 63 and below there may be too many hits, because system will return not only page numbers, but register numbers as well.
The registers
It is helpful to write the inventory and page numbers of interest down before visiting the municipal archive in 's-Heerenberg. The inventory numbers are written on the spine of the register books.
